Exploration #2e3

McREL:
Standards and Benchmarks for History

" For most subject areas, there is one or more set of standards published by a nationally recognized group of subject-area experts. In addition, almost all states have published standards in the subject areas. One can infer that if a school, district, or state is to design a schooling system based on standards, these many and varied efforts must be reconciled to some degree."

In response to that observation, McREL (Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning) has devloped a compilation of content standards for K-12 curriculum . The McREL Compendium of Standards and Benchmarks is both searchable and browsable.

You can navigate the History Standards and Benchmarks by scrolling down to the History section in the table of contents on the link above. You will see subsections for:

Grades K-4 History
Historical Understandings
United States History
World History

I'd suggest that you review the standards for grade levels above and below your current grade level or course of study and then focus your attention on your primary course of study.

As you navigate this online document, you will notice that clicking on each specific standard opens a new window with codes that identify the specific standard's inclusion in multiple standards and benchmark documents. (NCHS, NCSS, IB, etc.).

You will want add this site to your bookmarks/favorites collection for future reference. You may also want to print relevant sections of the document.

Note: The link above will open in a new browser window. When you finish your exploration, click the close button on the browser window to return to this page.
