Locating a text editor on your computer
There will be times when you will find it useful to have a simple text editor such as NotePad (for Windows users) and TextEdit (for Mac OS X users) open on the screen along with the web browser. Easy access to an open text editor will allow you to cut and paste URL’s (internet addresses) as well as text from the browser window into the text editor. You can also make onscreen notes to document the search process. Here’s how to locate the text editor on your computer if you don’t already know where it is:
Windows Users:
Notepad is located in the Accessories list in Windows.
Click on Start.
Click on Programs.
Click on Accessories.
Click on Notepad.
When NotePad opens, click on the Format menu and click Word Wrap. A check mark will appear.
Note: This last step will result in a normal word processor display. If you do not select Word Wrap, text may be displayed as one long line of text.
Windows users can create a desktop shortcut for Notepad with the following procedure.
Click on Start
Click on Programs
Click on Accessories
Right Click on Notepad. and select Send To and then Desktop (Create Shortcut).
Notepad will now be accessible at any time simply by double clicking the Notepad shortcut icon on your desktop.
Mac Users:
TextEdit (a simple text editor) is located in your Applications folder.
Click on the Finder.
Click on Applications.
Drag the TextEdit icon to your Dock.
Note: You are welcome to use your regular word processor software if you prefer. The advantage to using NotePad or TextEdit is that a text editor opens quicker, creates documents that are much smaller in size and can be opened and read by any computer.
