Introduction to advanced web research

In many cases, a basic search using several search engines, a parallel search engine or two and a handful of web indexes will supply more than enough information to get you started on your web research projects. In fact, it may supply too much information. Isn’t it ironic that we have moved from "I can’t find anything on this topic!" to "What am I going to do with all this information?" in such a short time.

In this next module of the course you will develop advanced search strategies that will make your web searching more productive. The topics you will cover include:

  • Analyzing and Refining Search Topics
  • Searching for Keywords and Synonyms
  • Using the "Similar" feature of search engines
  • "Searching for Phrases"
  • Using Boolean Operators to refine your search
  • Using the Advanced User Interface
  • Using Specialized Web Directories
  • Searching Beyond the Surface Web

If you feel you have exhausted your original search topic, feel free to select a new topic for this activity. If you are using a new topic, it is suggested that you create a new folder in your Bookmarks/Favorites list.
