Parallel search engines

When you were working your way through those tutorials on how search engines work, you probably ran across the term MetaSearch Engines or Parallel Search Engines. Parallel Search Engines are search tools that allow you to search multiple search engines with one query. They can save a tremendous amount of time and often turn up hits that you might miss if you use just one search engine.

You will now examine several of the many parallel search engines available. These are generally considered to be the top performers by information professionals.

In this exploration, you will use the same general topic you used with the search engines and will examining the "hits" returned by each of the parallel search engines. Look for similarities and differences. Are the webpages displayed near the top of the list consistent from one parallel search engines to the next?

Several of the parallel search engines offer a very useful feature called document clustering. These document clusters are typically displayed on the left side of the screen. Clicking on these clusters makes it possible to quickly adjust the search topic.

Resize the web browser window, open the digital logbook and the link to parallel search engines below.

Record your observations. Continue adding bookmarks to your growing collection. Save the digital logbook file when you are finished. Next you will examine Web Indexes.
