Exporting Your Internet Explorer Favorites (PC)

Note: These instructions are written for the current version of Internet Explorer. If you are still using an earlier version check the Internet Explorer Help files for specific instructions for your version.

Use these steps.

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on the File menu. If the File menu is not visible, click the Alt key next to the Space Bar to bring it into view.
  3. Click on Import and Export from the list that drops down.
  4. Select Export to a file and click the Next button.
  5. Select Favorites and click the Next button.
  6. Click on the folder you wish to export. If you click on the top Favorites folder all of your Favorites will be exported.
  7. On the Where do you want to export your favorites? dialog box appears, click on the Browse button and select the Desktop.
  8. Click on Save.
  9. The dialog box will reappear. Click on the Export button to save a copy of your Favorites to your computer desktop. Click on Finish to close the dialog box. Close Internet Explorer.
  10. Navigate to your computer's desktop. You should find a file named bookmark.
  11. Right click on this file and select Rename. Change the default bookmark file name to your first initial followed by your last name (example: bjost)

Important Note: Use only lower-case letters. Do not use any spaces.

  12. Double-clicking on this exported favorites file should open Internet Explorer and display your favorites on the screen. Clicking on the links should take you to the associated webpage.
  13. You are now ready to send your exported favorites to me as an attached file (see directions below if you need them).

Next: Send the Exported Bookmarks as an E-mail Attachment
