Sending Messages to Multiple Recipients

It is possible to send the same message to multiple recipients using the CC option.

Click on Compose to open a new message on the screen. Type my email address into the To: box.

To: bobjost@gmail.com

Now, look for the CC button in your email client's toolbar or menu items. CC stands for Carbon Copy. This term dates way back in the dark ages when folks actually had to use carbon paper to create duplicate copies on their typewriters.

Click the CC Button and notice how the new message has changed. A second address box has been added below the original TO: box.

Type your email address into the CC line:

CC: your email address

You can send CC's additional recipients by adding other email addresses to this line. Typically you will need to separate the addresses with a comma, semicolon or a space. Check your email client's Help files for more specific information on which format your email client requires.

Note: Recipients of a CC message will be able to see the email addresses of other recipients.

Enter the following subject:

Subject: email B

In the message body tell me about your previous experience with using email and other forms of online communication.

Send the message.

Record the date on which you sent the email B message in your logbook.

When you click the Send button, the message will be simultaneously delivered to all of the addresses that you entered.

The next time your check your email you should find a copy of the message in your inbox.

Sending a BCC (Blind Carbon Copy)

You may also notice a BCC button in the address options. A BCC is a blind carbon copy. Recipients whose addresses are entered into the BCC line will not see that the message has been sent to other recipients.

Netiquette Issues

You should definitely consider using the BCC option when you are sending a message to a large group of recipients. Not only does it make the message seem a bit more personal but it cuts down on the clutter in the message headers.

The BCC option can also be used to send yourself a copy of important email messages for your records. Your receipt of the message verifies that the message has been sent and delivered and timestamps the delivery date and time.
