INT 925: Project 2- Lesson Plan

Grade 2 (planned for 5 days)

Subject –Language Arts

1.9 Listening and Speaking – Report on a topic using facts and details

Day 1- Picture walk Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann with the whole class.  Model predicting and questioning with the illustrations.  Ask for students to write their own predictions and questions on sticky notes and post them on the board.  This will promote ownership to the students' responses.

Day 2- Read the story together.  Refer back to questions and predictions from day 1.  Stop and clarify word students may not understand. Write the clarifications in the board.

Day 3- Divide class into same ability leveled groups.  This way all students will have to participate.  There won't be a "leader" in each group.  Each group will make   a poster summarizing what happened in the middle, beginning, and end of the story using complete sentences and illustrations.  The teacher can rotate the room to monitor progress.  Have groups share their posters when completed.

Day 4-Discuss with class reasons why Gloria was such an amazing dog.  Then discuss other amazing animals.  Write responses on the board.

Day 5- Divide class into pairs.  Each pair will choose and "Amazing Animal" to research and report to the class on.  Each pair will have to at least report on the following:  name of the animal, habitat and what it eats.  Students can record information on poster paper.  Students can use books from the library and the following websites to conduct their research:
