State English Language Arts Standard #4
Students will read, write, listen and speak for social interaction.
Lesson #1
This activity will help children to improve listening skills and practice using appropriate volume and expression.
Activities:
*Teacher will read “Goldilocks and the 3 Bears”.
*Teacher will ask children to listen for differences in tone and volume as characters change.
*Teacher will use a character’s voice and children will guess which character is being imitated.
*Students will take turns role playing characters and different voices.
*Teacher will discuss situations when children and adults use changing volume and tone. (talking to parents, principal, when they are angry, etc.)
Materials: “Goldilocks and the 3 Bears”
Lesson #2
This activity focuses on understanding facial expressions and body language.
Activities:
*Teacher will begin by choosing a card with an expression written on it. He/she must act out the expression without using words.
*Children will guess the emotion the teacher is acting out.
*Children will take turns playing charades with expression cards.
*Children will learn the importance of body language and how to interpret others expressions.
Materials: Emotion/Feeling Cards
Lesson #3
This activity will require students to take turns discussing specific events and emotions as well as asking appropriate questions. This activity is a great way to teach conversational skills.
Activities:
*Students and teacher will sit in a circle. The teacher will hold a basket containing cards. Each card will contain a topic for discussion (ex. “a time I was scared)
*Each student will have a turn to pick a card and discuss the topic.
Lesson #4
This culminating activity will allow children to make their own “Feelings Book”.
Activities:
*Children will be given a blank booklet and crayons.
*Teacher will assist students in illustrating each page depicting an emotion or feeling.
*Depending on student level, children may also write on each page (ex. “I am angry when my sister breaks my toy).
*Finally, each student will share his or her books with the rest of the group. *Children will provide compliments for each child’s book.
