SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE:
During this lesson, students will learn about important, influential African Americans in U.S. history. Students will develop knowledge through reading both books and using online resources. Students, in groups, will use online resources to provide an in-depth look at a particular person and develop a short presentation for the class about this individual.
MATERIALS:
Book: African Americans Who Were First, by Constance Claytor
Craft paper, markers, pencils etc. (for studentŐs visual aide)
MANAGEMENT: Whole Class discussion, small group activity
TIME FRAME: 2-3 days
PROCEDURE:
(Day 1)
Set Induction-
- Teacher will spark discussion by asking students if they can name some famous African Americans
Development-
- Teacher will then read the book, Americans Who Were First. This book talks about 20 different famous African- Americans.
- Teacher will facilitate a whole class discussion while reading the story
(Day 2)
- Teacher will divide students into groups of 5 and assign one famous person to each group.
- Teacher will provide a website students can go to that lists African American icons (at History.com)
- Students will choose a person, approval from teacher, then do more research on that individual
- Teacher will provide a list of websites that the students can you to research their person
- Students will write a paragraph with at least 10 facts, which include birth and death, major accomplishments, other interesting facts.
- Students will then create a visual aide: poster/artwork, skit, diagram etc.
(Day 3)
- Each group will do their presentation about assigned person
