Topic: Ohio Animals

Standards Covered: Ohio Science Content Standards-Life Sciences: 7. Compare the habitats of many different kinds of Ohio plants and animals and some of the ways animals depend on plants and each other. 8. Compare activities of Ohio’s common activities during the different seasons by describing changes in their behaviors and body coverings.

Objective: The students will be able to identify animal facts, characteristics, and habitats of Ohio’s common animals.

Procedure:

• Review the basic animal groups discussed in previous lessons as a beginning activity.
• Introduce a list of common Ohio animals that the students will study.
• Assign students to groups with four students in each group.
• Assign each student group an animal to research.
• Take students to computer lab and log onto the Internet. (May need to ask for high school helpers or parent volunteers depending on the level of your students and the number of students)
• Give each student a graphic organizer with questions from the ReadThinkWrite animal inquiry section website (each student in the group will have a different graphic organizer topic, all for the same animal):

• Have students use the following websites to research facts about their animals:

• Have students record their findings on their hard copy of the graphic organizers.
• If time allows, students can then type their results in the graphic organizers at the same ReadThinkWrite website as above.
• Finally student groups report their findings to the class and discuss.

Assessment: The students were able to research and record answers to the questions on their graphic organizers and report them with their group to the class.
