Lesson Plan
Amanda Estes: INT 925 Project #2
Subject: Math (fractions)
California Content Standards: 2.3 Solve simple problems, including ones arising in concrete situations, involving the addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers (like and unlike denominators of 20 or less), and express answers in the simplest form.
Websites:
http://www.funbrain.com/fractop/index.html
http://www.internet4classrooms.com/skills_5th_math.htm
Lesson Plan:
I plan on using the above websites to help reinforce students' ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, simply, and convert improper fractions to mixed numbers. The soccer shootout game at www.funbrain.com provides students an opportunity to practice skills while playing a game. The website also provides different levels of difficulty, which allows differentiation for the students. I am planning on using this site as a review and challenge for students. I think it is important for them to be able to perform all of the steps when working with fractions.
The second website provides multiple links to websites that perform more isolated operations. I will use this site as additional practice for students who are having a difficult time adding or subtracting fractions with like or unlike denominators. I think this site provides multiple opportunities for students to practice skills that are more specific for their needs.
I believe the interaction of these sites will help engage students and help their understanding of fractions. It will provide an opportunity other then paper and pencil to practice their skills. I think it will also allow my stronger students to challenge themselves while students that are struggling will be able to work at a lower level. It is not very often that you can use the same assignment in math for all students and provide differentiation.
